Film Recommendations
Presented in no particular order, the following lists of movies represent a compendium of films that I've watched and enjoyed, some more than once, a few more than twice or even thrice. Most are rated R or unrated, and many are entirely unsuitable for children (or adults) of any age. I'd like to think that if you're ever lost as to what movie to rent, buy, download or watch next, you could do a lot worse than to check out most of the films I've posted here. The lists are arranged according to genres and we start out with the one that has certainly had the most impact on me, both as an artist and as a person -- namely Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
WARNING! Important points to keep in mind when looking for movies to rent, download, or buy.
One should be wary of selecting any movie based on title alone. The situation with film titles, film formats, and a multitude of other factors has created nothing short of a chaotic jungle with respect to choosing and watching a movie that may exist in three or four different forms and formats, and share a title with two or more other films . The major studios have been playing games with consumers for a long time, first producing an original threatrical version, then a home-video version with a different rating or screen format, then an unrated version, then an extended director's-cut version, and on and on it goes. Usually for the sole sake of squeezing every dollar possible out of their unwitting customers. Blu-ray discs now routinely contain extended cuts of films (or additional features) that differ from the same exact film on DVD. Gee, nothing sneaky about that, right? A beautiful copy of the excellent movie, The Thirteenth Floor, was released on DVD as a pan-and-scan version only. Oh, you wanted the widescreen version? Sorry, you have to buy the Blu-ray for that. And on and on it goes. If you follow the information I've provided -- and my advice -- you might be spared a lot of wasted time and money. Maybe. I still get caught despite knowing exactly what to watch out for. Especially as regards widescreen vs. full-screen or standard TV formats.
Did you know you can't copyright the title to a book or movie? Nope. That's why I own four different movies all with the title, BUG. Nothing confusing about that, right? I ordered WRONG TURN from Amazon and rather than the horror movie version, I instead got the crime drama starring Cuba Gooding. And still, on and on it goes. I also own (this is just between you and me, okay) lots of movies that I bought because something on the outside led me to believe there was something interesting on the inside. There's an old saying about how you can't judge a book by its cover. This has never been more true than for the artwork and verbiage (rhymes with garbiage) that accompanies DVD's. If you take nothing else away from all I'm describing, burn it into your brain that not only do lots of DVD movie covers portray scenes that never appear in the actual film, but they contain synopses that are often grossly inaccurate if not outright misrepresentations. There's no law against it, the studios figure, so why not? Buyer (or renter) beware has never been more true.
Finally how can savvy consumers protect themselves (and protect is the right word) from unsavory studios who try to lure you into buying, renting, or downloading their crappy movie? Again in no particular order, here's a short list of some of the things you can do to help ensure you get the most movie bang for your buck:
1) Whenever you see a movie you liked, make a note as to who the director was. It's a pretty good bet you'll like other films by that same director.
2) Whenever you see a movie you liked, make a note as to who reviewed the movie (on the front or back cover) and what they said. If you see a good review by that same reviewer on another film, you'll probably like it, also.
3) Amazon.com is a rich and rewarding resource for movie reviews. But only if you know by name, the movie you're after. After 15 years of reading reviews on Amazon, they're almost always helpful and accurate. Unless there's only one review of the movie which reads like it was written by a five-year-old.
4) Word-of-mouth. Similar to reviews you might read on Amazon written by people of all ages and from all walks, the opinions of friends, acquaintances, and family members can be useful. If your friend admits, however, that their favorite space movie is Plan 9 From Outer Space, you should not only ignore their advice, but reconsider your friendship with them as well.
5) These last two are iffy, but worth a shot as a last resort. Films that contain name actors. Some of the worst movies I've seen had one or more known actors in them. And it's gotten worse over the years. "Big name" actors, though, like Denzel Washington or Harrison Ford, are almost certainly a safe bet. But not always. The Man with the Iron Fists, a recent, low-budget martial arts film that's among the worst pieces of kung-fu dreck I've ever had the misfortune of watching, starred Lucy Liu and Russell Crowe. So there you go.
6) Last on the short list are the studios themselves. I'm almost tempted to call this my "enemies list". Like name actors, the bigger the studio, the better your chances, but never roll the dice, so to speak, based only on the fact that a known studio is on the cover. You can't even necessarily trust that the studio name on the case is the same studio that made the movie. They may have only distributed the film as a favor to someone's stupid nephew who fancies himself as a director. By the way, next time you watch a supposed big name movie, look how many different companies are often involved in the production. All of them sharing the risk, I suspect. But three, four, even five different companies, all with their grimy little fingers in the pie, so to speak, seems a lot more common nowadays. (you don't think I sound bitter, do you?)
